The
Kardashian family come in all shapes and sizes and the man behind making
them look their best is trainer to the stars Gunnar Peterson.
And
now he has revealed the secrets of his work with A-listers, which also
include Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey.
Kim Kardashian is well-known for her hourglass figure, but it doesn’t come easily to the reality star.

Dedicated: Kim Kardashian showed off her amazing figure on Wednesday, the result of lots of hours at the gym
‘Obviously
there’s a genetic predisposition but Kim works so incredibly hard,’
Gunnar told MailOnline. ‘Squats, lunges, sleds, and deadlifts. She’s not
tall either.
‘She
just trains - she’s one of the hardest working people inside and
outside the gym. Just grind, grind, grind. The work Kim puts in she
knows it pays off, I did some of her post-baby training too.’
In
fact, the 33-year-old is so dedicated to her fitness that when she
couldn’t stop talking about her workouts, Kanye West dropped by to see
what was going on.
‘After a certain period of time the spouse shows up. Whether it’s with them or to drop something off,’ Gunnar reveals.
‘Kanye’s
been here, it’s not jealousy... I don’t think they’re worried about
that but what happens is their training becomes so much a part of their
daily speech they want to check it out. You can’t help talking about a
good session.’
The
buff trainer spilled how Tom Cruise was a rare exception and didn’t
drop by the gym once in the years he was working out with the actor’s
then-girlfriend Penelope Cruz.
No pain no gain: Kim (L) and Khloe work hard with trainer to the stars Gunnar Peterson, who has revealed their workout secrets
In
fact, all of the Kardashians put in the effort when they are at the
gym. ‘The whole family has an athlete’s work ethic, all of them,’ Gunnar
said.
Khloe has been seen at the Los Angeles location on a daily basis, and the dedication is paying off.
‘She
comes in every day and starts her workout between 6am and 10am,’ the
trainer divulged. ‘Her boxing skills are exceptional, the technique and
power is so impressive. She works hard and isn’t scared of the early
morning routines.’
Meanwhile,
the ever busy matriarch Kris Jenner doesn’t have time to put work on
hold for working out, so makes business calls during her sessions.
‘She’s
so driven. Kris comes to the gym at 6:30am and she’s on the treadmill
while on her cell phone, shouting down the phone about millions of
dollars,’ Gunnar said. ‘She’s everything to that franchise.
No time to stop: Kris Jenner can’t put work on hold during workouts, so makes business calls from the treadmill
It really works: This sexy photo of Kris can be seen inside Gunnar's gym for workout inspiration
‘People
accuse her of exploiting her kids but she hasn’t, she’s helped her kids
get jobs. I think she’s done wonderful and it’s unfair for people to
criticize. Kim and Khloe didn’t go to college and they’re making way
more money than I am, so I’d say they’re f***ing winning.’
Interestingly, Gunnar told MailOnline that Rob Kardashian is back at the gym and working hard after gaining weight.
‘I’m
never disappointed by Rob, there’s a certain ebb and flow to people’s
lives and his is magnified,’ the guru explained. ‘Rob’s back on his path
and he’s been working out all week.
‘It’s
just a blip in the radar. He’ll look back on this year and say, “Oh
remember when I got fat?” He’ll be right back on it, he’s still so
young. Yo-yo dieting is unhealthy for sure but Rob’s always been in good
shape, his work ethic is second to none.
‘I
guess Rob hit a patch, I don’t know what he’s going through but it’ll
pass. He’s sharp, super funny and dedicated. He works like an animal
here and is friends with a bunch of athletes.’
‘Thank you for kicking my ass every day’: Gunnar has a funny message from the Kardashian matriarch at his Los Angeles gym
Gunnar,
whose journey began at a Weight Watchers meeting aged 10 when he
suffered from anxiety of playing sport at school in ‘skins’ because of
his ‘boobs’, may be the most in-demand trainer in Los Angeles but
insists anyone is welcome to sign up for sessions providing they’re
willing to work.
‘There’s
a filtering process but I don’t have a velvet rope telling someone they
can’t come in,’ he tells MailOnline exclusively.
‘The
busiest – and most successful – people that I train always come alone. I
don’t train a celebrity if it means haggling with a rep or publicist.
The ones I do train aren’t clueless, maybe I can’t compete with them all
physically because some are pro athletes but I can spot where you can
improve.’
He exposes rapper and entrepreneur P Diddy as one of the few people who arrives with security and an entourage.
‘The types of person I train are the ones who’ll do more than I ask and always come back for more.’
Gunnar
takes pride in his specialized workout routines designed for whoever he
is training – and he doesn’t share that special detail with anyone.
A family
with an 'athlete's work ethic': Kris gets up at the crack of dawn to
work out, while Rob Kardashian is apparently back at the gym and trying
to lose weight
He
joked: ‘I write a different workout for a different person every day
but the specifics are private. It’s like a gynaecologist; they’ll talk
to you about vaginas all day long but they won’t give you a pap smear
for you to study.’
When
asked about dieting myths he said: ‘Everyone has their own thing even
down to the temperature of the water they drink. I know someone who
would set an alarm at 3 in the morning to drink a protein shake. There
are some crazy things but a lot of it can be placebo.’
Gunnar
says he’s only ever walked out on one training session when a British
actor – whose identity is kept anonymous – began being abusive.
‘I’ve
only had one guy I’ve walked out on. He’s a British actor and was very
aggressive, very argumentative and he started getting a little
insulting.
‘I
thought, I don’t need this any more so I just left the gym. I didn’t
hear from him again until eight years later when he called me to
apologize, explaining he’d been involved in some substances.’
Such
behaviour is unexpected and unacceptable for Gunnar, the disciplined
master behind the astonishing physiques of Sylvester Stallone in Rocky
IV and Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider 2.
Hard workers only: Gunnar says anyone can train with him, as long as they are willing to make an effort
‘Angelina
is a dream client, it’s one of those things when you’re genuinely
amazed – I want to work with her all the time,’ he says.
He
believes the stunning actress – who had a mastectomy earlier this year –
will know her own limits in terms of recovery and working out again.
He
said: ‘She is comfortable and confident with who she is. If anyone’s
going to come back [into the gym] from the operation she had then it’s
going to be her.
‘She’ll do the work because she knows what it takes. Look how long she has stayed looking good and performing well.
‘I
don’t think she’s ever look bad, not a single day in her life. You can
do whatever; no make-up and cut her hair off, and she’ll still look
good. Angelina has that little smile that lets you know that she gets
it.’
They go way back: The guru has worked with all kinds of A-listers from Sylvester Stallone to Angelina Jolie
Gunnar,
who is currently training Chloe Moretz to look like ‘someone who can
handle herself in any situation’ for movie The Fifth Wave, has also
worked with Matthew McConaughey ‘for years’ and gushed about his ‘work
ethic’.
‘He’s
incredibly diligent, very knowledgeable about the body and exercise,
and more than a lot of people knowledgeable about his own capabilities,’
the trainer said. ‘He’ll know how far he can push his body, he knows he
can get his body to this and it’s not cockiness, it’s a confidence.
‘It’s
knowledge of self and he’s so dialled and so tuned in, it’s super fun
to work with him. I didn’t even blink, wasn’t worried at all, when he
lost that weight for Dallas Buyers Club.
'He’d
trained with me for Magic Mike prior to that and I know when you’re
going to drop weight like that it’s going to get deep into specific
nutrition so I introduced him to a nutritionist and he did it as healthy
as extreme weight loss could be.'
He
added: ‘It was methodical and periodised. He nailed it. It’s funny –
stick to the plan and the plan works. When you saw him winning his
Oscar, he was back to being a picture of health.’
Perks of the job: Gunnar has many celebrities in his phone book, and Mike Tyson is just one of the people he has worked with
